Today is the last day to register to vote in New York State. You can do it here:
None of us need another reason to vote Trump out of office, but we received several yesterday.
First, Trump called into the Fox business channel and whined to anchor Maria Bartiromo about almost everything under the sun. Trump’s angry ramble included a reaction to last night’s VP debate, and Trump called Senator Kamala Harris a “monster,” a “liar,” a “communist,” and “unlikable.” As this blog noted yesterday, Trump and the Republicans are well on their way to painting Harris as a shrill, evil, baby-eating witch–like every other Democratic woman who has entered the national spotlight. All-out demonizing and character assassination has become a key part of their playbook and reminds us that the Trumpublicans belong to a dark and repressive past rather than an inclusive and egalitarian future. Trump also lied about bogus vote-by-mail fraud incidents, brought up Hillary’s emails (for the zillionth time) and eventually begged AG William Barr (who has been quarantining since exposure to Trump) to bring unspecified criminal charges against Obama, Clinton and Biden. In other words, the call was a shitshow. Maybe Trump was feeling the pressure of bad poll numbers, maybe Trump was feeling the mania of the steriods he’s taking, maybe Trump was just unhinged, or all of the above.
Second, a joint law-enforcement task force arrested six “militia” members in Michigan for plotting to kidnap and likely kill Michigan Governor Whitmer (a Democratic woman, of course), plotting to kill local police, and plotting to overthrow the Michigan government. The authorities infiltrated these militia groups and seemed to have gathered ample evidence on the domestic terrorists, who were booked on a variety of serious charges. Some of the six were in attendance at the infamous armed takeover of the Michigan State House, an action that Trump supported with his usual “fine people” description. And some of the six were initially inspired to action by Trump’s tweet “LIBERATE MICHIGAN” in response to Whitmer’s coronavirus restrictions. Whitmer criticized Trump in a press conference yesterday, and last night Trump predictably lashed out at Whitmer, writing that he’s done a terrible job blah blah blah. It’s clear that domestic terrorists are a far greater threat to our nation than BLM protesters or “antifa,” none of whom have killed anyone or plotted to kidnap a governor. And it’s obvious that Trump has done an effective job of inspiring acts of terrorism and violence, as yesterday’s arrests proved.
As Trump and his lawyers work to attack our election system and invalidate the results well in advance of election day, other Republicans are revealing the truth about their values. Senator Mike Lee of Utah yesterday tweeted (from Covid quarantine) that America is not a Democracy:
The word “democracy” appears nowhere in the Constitution, perhaps because our form of government is not a democracy. It’s a constitutional republic. To me it matters. It should matter to anyone who worries about the excessive accumulation of power in the hands of the few.Senator Mike Lee, Twitter
People from across the political spectrum reacted with outrage. Steve Schmidt pointed out that Lee’s tweet was a perfect example of authoritarianism. And it’s rich that Lee whines about excessive power in the hands of the few. Republicans have nearly perfected the art of accumulating power even though they represent a clear minority of Americans. They haven’t won the popular vote in a presidential race in 16 years, and their Senators represent a tiny fraction of the voters represented by Democratic Senators. It’s astonishing that a Republican Senator is denying that the United States is–or should be–a democracy, but his motivation is clear. His party will lose its power in a true democracy, a fact Trump openly admitted in March of this year, saying, “when the American people vote, Republicans lose.”
Americans win when Trump shuts up, and yesterday we learned that the next debate will probably not take place. Staff at the National Debate Committee insisted for reasons of safety that the next debate be held virtually, on October 15th, and while Joe Biden naturally agreed and accepted, Trump whined and declined. So Biden instead will hold a town hall that night and Trump is considering holding another deadly superspreader rally. For real.
Here are three questions I hope we get answers to today or over the weekend. Where is William Barr and does he have Covid? Where are Trump’s children and do they have Covid? When was Trump’s last negative Covid test before he tested positive?
Keep resisting Trump and keep working to “vote his ass out of office.”
Have a nice autumn weekend.
